Art is about connection.
I am interested in creating a feeling rather than a replication of nature that will connect on a visceral level. I prefer a palette of vibrant colour, deep textures, bold outlines, and like to stretch the paint in unusual ways to
capture the spirit and energy of the natural world.”
The invisible bond that connects us to the natural world is the source of Lauren Henry's inspiration. She is concerned about climate change, the loss of habitat and the destruction of our forests, which are themes that run through her work.
The resilience and rejuvenation of nature are equally important to her, and are represented in the bright palette she chooses. Using thick, layered applications of paint to achieve a vibrant, textured, living sense of form, she invites us to reach out and connect to the inhabitants of the natural world. Her influences are indigenous Canadian art, the landscapes of northern Canada and artists like Riopelle and Borduas, Lawren Harris and the Group of 7, as well as contemporary artists like Richard Riverin. In all her paintings, whether of nature, figures or abstracts, she reaches for a tactile expression of energy in colour and form.
